Well summer arrived over the weekend with temperatures in the mid-70s and crystal blue skies. It was a weekend for yardwork, golf, and barbeques on the deck. I was looking on the avalanche centers’ website and they had a graph of snow totals for the last several years. what was interesting to me–and that’s probably only because I’m a weather nut–is that last year, as we all recall was an epic year, the snow pack was increasing through the first week of May and peaked somewhere around May 5th or 6th with a base depth of about 160″. This year the snowpack peaked around March 20th with a base depth of only 65″ and has been decreasing ever since. As of today there’s very little snow in the mountains especially below about 8,000 feet and everybody is in full summer mood. Mountain bikes and road bikes were in abundance over the weekend and the golf course was packed.
This is definitely the slowest time of the year for all of the mountain resorts. Restaurants are closed, locals are on vacation somewhere tropical and the rest of us just take a deep breath and relax, recovering from the hectic winter months. And that is exactly what I intend to do this week: take some time off to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts–though it is supposed to snow Thursday or Friday–get my yard in shape for summer and get my golf swing going. So, see you next week!
